Day of Ashura
The Day of Ashura is the 10th of Muharram. On this day, the salvation of Prophet Musa from Pharaoh is reported in sound narrations; the Prophet (peace be upon him) fasted in honour of this day and recommended his companions to do the same.
In 2026, Day of Ashura falls on 2026-06-25. The Hijri equivalent is 10 Muharrem 1448.
What Does This Day Remind Us?
Ashura is the remembrance of salvation and gratitude. Sharing 'ashura' (a sweet pudding) with neighbours is an established tradition; what matters is the meaning of sharing and gratitude.
A Small Step for Today
- If you are able, make the intention to fast on the Day of Ashura; following the sunnah, it is recommended to combine it with the 9th or 11th of Muharram.
- Cook ashura with your family and offer some to your neighbours and to relatives who live alone.
- Give in charity; turn your heart toward gratitude.
- Reflect on the salvation of Prophet Musa and count the blessings in your own life.
When the Prophet came to Medina he saw the Jews fasting on the Day of Ashura, and asked about it. They said: 'This is the day on which Allah saved Musa and his people from Pharaoh.' He said: 'We are closer to Musa than you,' and he fasted that day and commanded the people to fast. (Bukhari, Sawm 69)
